Finding yourself in need of a new roof? If you have been in touch with more than one roofing company, chances are you may have received quotes that vary widely in price. With replacement costs ranging anywhere from $5,000 to 25,000 or more, how can you really estimate the cost of replacing your roof?

There are actually several factors that determine how much a roof replacement will cost, including the following:
1. Roof Size
This is one of the more obvious factors. The size of a roofing project is measured in roofing squares, which are 10 feet by 10 feet. A single roofing square is equivalent to 100 square feet. It is important to note that most roofing companies charge per roofing square and not per square feet.
2. Roofing Material
Another important factor that determines the cost is the type of roofing material you will use. Asphalt is the most economical option, but there are a lot of other materials available in the market with slate, metal and wood shake typically being the most expensive.
3. Roof Pitch
The pitch or slope is the incline of the roof expressed as a ratio of the vertical rise to the horizontal run and is always expressed as inches per foot. The steeper your roof is, the harder it is for roofers to move around while they work. This extra effort can drive up the cost of your roofing project.
